I’ve written earlier about the dark side of AgenticAI in telecom, but it’s clear that telecom operators are still moving ahead with exploring its potential.
The latest GSMA white paper shows how we’re moving beyond just automating tasks. We’re entering an era where AI agents can think, collaborate, and act on their own — across networks, homes, and digital platforms.
The paper outlines four key implementation areas, all aimed at helping operators find new ways to earn revenue and improve efficiency.
A couple of exciting scenarios: Imagine a “generative network” that sets itself up based on a simple request like, “I need a secure, low-latency network for a smart factory.” Or smart home assistants that don’t just follow commands — they understand your needs, manage your devices, and even help plan your weekend by connecting with travel, food, and shopping apps.
The paper also shares three strategic paths for telecom operators:
– Tool-oriented – Share existing services through APIs.
– Service-oriented – Add LLMs to core services for smarter automation.
– Ecosystem-oriented – Build platforms where AI agents work together and connect with other services.
*** A few questions to think about ***
Q1. Do you think deploying AI agents in telecom networks is practical today?
Q2. What does your organisation need to lead in this space — better tools, a new mindset, or the right partnerships?
Let’s discuss.
