Why Telecom Operators Are Flocking to Perplexity?

Over the past year, we’ve seen significant developments from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and Microsoft Copilot. However, this year, Perplexity has dominated discussions, especially after raising $73.6 million in January and an additional $62.7 million in April, pushing its valuation over $1 billion. Notably, telecom operators have also partnered with and invested in Perplexity.

Let’s explore why it has gained such popularity, particularly among telecom operators.

Perplexity’s rise in popularity can be attributed to its unique capability to answer complex questions efficiently. It achieves this by searching the live internet for relevant resources and processing those results through an AI model to deliver concise answers. This method contrasts with traditional search engines like Google, which often require users to navigate through multiple pages of content.

SK Telecom has invested $10 million in Perplexity to collaborate on developing large language models (LLMs). This partnership will also see Perplexity’s AI-powered search integrated into SK Telecom’s AI personal assistants, including its A. (Adot) application.

In April, Deutsche Telekom and SoftBank joined forces with Perplexity to introduce its capabilities to their vast broadband user base. This partnership aims to revolutionize search and information access, in line with the telecom companies’ mission of making technology widely accessible. Leveraging a combined user base of over 335 million across mobile and broadband, this collaboration significantly expands Perplexity’s reach.

Why Telecom Operators are Interested in Perplexity

Telecom operators are drawn to Perplexity because of its innovative AI-powered search engine, which employs LLMs to deliver fast and accurate answers. This technology offers several key benefits:

  • Enhanced User Experience: Perplexity’s AI search engine provides more concise and direct answers, improving user experience and setting telecom operators apart from traditional search engines like Google.

  • Increased Customer Value: By offering Perplexity’s premium version for free, telecom operators can add value for their subscribers, boosting customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  • Competitive Advantage: Perplexity’s advanced AI capabilities help telecom operators develop sophisticated AI personal assistants, providing real-time information and interactive search features, thus giving them a competitive edge.

While there are alternatives such as OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, and Copilot, Perplexity’s AI-powered search engine stands out with its potential to transform how telecom operators engage with their customers. By delivering fast and accurate answers, enhancing user experiences, and offering competitive advantages, Perplexity enables telecom operators to stay ahead of the competition and drive revenue growth. As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve, Perplexity is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of search and AI-driven services.
